Notable Constituents: See Dong et al, 2017 for a more complete review of the literature on the constituents of Forsythia.

Quality Tests:
This herb is difficult to quality assess because it looks the same after boiling and being left to dry as it does if simply dried so there is a risk of used herbs being resold (Open day at Avicenna Clinic Brighton, 2016).

Fresh capsules collected in early autumn are called Qing Qiao (Green Forsythia), are more green in colour and considered superior. When fully ripe and collected before winter they are called Huang Qiao (Yellow Forsythia) or Lao Qiao (Old Forsythia).

Notes:

Most sources list the channels entered as Lung, Heart and Gall Bladder, but the Taiwan Pharmacopoeia and a systematic review by Li et al. (2024) list it as Lung, Heart and Small Intestine. The difference is between it being the organ opposite (and therefore balancing) the Heart in the Chinese Clock, or its pair within the Five Phases.

This herb was used as a subplot in the film Contagion as an alternative antiviral remedy for the pandemic, showing the writers did their homework, even on the alternative medicine side of the plot.
