Mitochondrial Health Consulting

Mitochondria fuel our body's cells, making them essential for our health. As a byproduct they produce free radicals which can be damaging, but also trigger adaptive changes to help us cope better with future stress. Supporting your mitochondria with controlled stressors to improve our health and reduce the likelihood of disease as we age has been practised in China for thousands of years.

My Approach

Having decades of experience in studying traditional and historical medicine, and a PhD in how these interact with mitochondria, the cellular powerhouses that lie at the centre of our metabolism, I am developing a program to educate people on how they can improve their mitochondrial function using time-tested, traditional techniques and natural substances. I do not promise a quick fix or an easy hack but that you can become educated in how mitochondria respond to the stimuli we place them under, and how, over time, we can encourage them to adapt in a direction that should lead to:

  • Improved energy
  • Enhanced resilience
  • Increased fitness
  • Better physical and mental functioning
  • Decreased risk of many diseases

These goals can be attempted by both those with metabolic disorders and those without who are looking to mange their future health or improve their physical and mental performance. The means to do this are different according to your starting point which is why many find that books or programs delivered to a mass audience so often fail for them.

Traditional Medicine Insights

Traditional and historical insights into medicine offers a unique perspective into this. Historically most traditional medical systems aimed to treat disease before it developed, since they lacked the interventions of today to treat advanced states of disease. This suggests that many of their interventions were aimed at improving resilience and enhancing our mitochondrial functioning in order to reap the benefits of a healthy life. Nowhere is this more clearly stated than in Chinese medicine where the practice of "nurturing life" to improve longevity dates back to the earliest texts we know. A phenomenal array of techniques and interventions have been developed over China's long history and varied geography which modern science is starting to understand were most likely aimed at maximising mitochondrial function.

The Process

Metabolic consulting will begin with a one-on-one consultation to discover your exact personal situation and history. This will be followed up by a series of meetings in which a strategy will be developed and unfolded, piece by piece, according to your circumstances and feedback, starting with an introduction to metabolism and mitochondria: what they are, what they do and how they influence our health. This will be followed by similar consultations on the benefits and harms of particular interventions. These include:

  • Diets
  • Exercises
  • Sleep patterns
  • External stimuli like heat, light and cold
  • Manual therapies such as massage, acupuncture and cupping
  • Herbal medicines like adaptogens and antioxidants

There will be no actual treatments included and so the entire process can be done online or in person equally. Instead, the principle of each intervention will be explained and how it might be suitable or tailored for you needs, so that specific treatments can be sought out by a local practitioner, either independently or in partnership with my guidance. Treatments from me can be requested as an additional service on top of the consulting, if possible. If being carried out remotely, herbal consultations are possible online but naturally manual therapies will require you to travel to my location.

Group sessions, corporate consultations and presentations made to organisations may also be possible upon request.
