Key Symptoms: Vomiting immediately after eating, diarrhoea
Secondary Symptoms: Diarrhoea need not always be present and this formula can also be used where vomiting is not helped by formulas based on Mu Xiang, Sha Ren, Chen Pi and Ban Xia (Ke Qin, in Scheid et al. 2009, 133)

Ingredients

Gan Jiang 9g
Huang Qin 9g
Huang Lian 3-9g
Ren Shen 9g

Preparation: Decoction.

Actions: Unblocks the Qi dynamic with acrid herbs, directs downwards with bitter herbs, regulates and tonifies the Spleen and Stomach

Notes:
Cold rejection is when a person with long-standing Cold-type diarrhoea is mistakenly purged and contracts a Cold Damage disorder, exacerbating the Cold below which rejects the descent of Heat from above leading to an increase in diarrhoea accompanied by vomiting immediately after eating.

One liang is taken as 3g in modern sources but in Eastern Han times it was equivalent to 13.875g. This means that the dosages in classical formulae could have been more than 4x what is given today making them far higher than recommended safe dosages today but prompts consideration of what an effective dose may be (He, 2013).
