Author: Zhang Zhong-Jing, 張仲景

Year: c. 220

Source: Discussion of Cold Damage (Shang Han Lun, 傷寒論)

Category: Formulas that Harmonise

Pattern: Shaoyang disorder with injury to Stomach Yin (usually due to inappropriate purging)

Key Symptoms: Constipation, fullness in the chest and hypochondria with vomiting, alternating chills and fever (with fever more prominent in the afternoon).

Ingredients

Chai Hu 9g
Huang Qin 3g
Ren Shen 3g
Zhi Ban Xia 3g
Mang Xiao 6g
Zhi Gan Cao 3g
Sheng Jiang 2sl
Da Zao 4pcs

Subsitutions:
In the UK Mang Xiao must be substituted with Yu Li Ren.

Preparation: Decoction.

Actions: Harmonises and releases the Shaoyang, softens hardness, drains downward

Notes:
One liang is taken as 3g in modern sources but in Eastern Han times it was equivalent to 13.875g. This means that the dosages in classical formulae could have been more than 4x what is given today making them far higher than recommended safe dosages today but prompts consideration of what an effective dose may be (He, 2013).
