Moxa Heat Therapy (艾灸, Ai Jiu)

Moxibustion is the use of burning herbs to apply heat to points. It is thought to pre-date the use of needles and still enjoys great popularity in both its traditional form and using a wide range of modern tools. It is such an integral part of traditional Chinese medicine that the common name for acupuncture, 针灸 Zhen Jiu, means needle-moxibustion therapy. This can be applied in many ways including:
  • Indirect Moxa: Holding a moxa cigar near to a point where it can circled around an area or "pecked" on a specific point.
  • Direct Moxa: Placing the moxa directly on the skin, or on slices of fresh herbs such as ginger and garlic to infuse the herbs into the skin.
  • Warm Needle: Placing the moxa in a basket on top of a needle to send heat down into a specific point.
  • Moxa Box: Placing pieces of moxa inside a box to warm a large area.
  • Moxa Rollers: Placing sticks of moxa inside a rolling device to provide hot massage.
  • TDP Lamp: Using electronic infrared devices that imitate the sensation of moxa.
