Pattern: Postpartum Cold invasion of the womb stagnating Blood

Key Symptoms: Retention of lochia with cold and pain in the lower abdomen, discharge of turbid and decaying blood starting with small purple-red clots and seeping of dark red fluid.

Tongue: Pale purple with purple spots
Pulse: Thin, submerged and choppy


Ingredients

Dang Gui 24g
Chuan Xiong 9g
Tao Ren 6-9g
Pao Jiang 1.5g
Zhi Gan Cao 1.5g


Preparation: Decoction with the optional addition of wine.


Actions: Invigorates the Blood, transforms and dispels Blood stasis, warms the menses, alleviates pain

Contraindications: Blood stasis or haemorrhage due to Heat. Pregnancy. Should be modified if there has been normal discharge of lochia.



Notes:
This is the principal post-partum formula in Taiwan for the first week after childbirth, usually followed by building up of Qi and Blood with Ba Zhen Tang for the remainder of the month before replenishing lost Kidney Essence with Liu Wei Di Huang Wan or similar.
